WTA Madrid Open: Kuznetsova v Bencic

Due to start at 8:30 pm

Kuznetsova 2.54, Bencic 1.61

Head to heads are 1-1. They last met In September 2016 in Wuhan, China. Kuznetsova won on a hard court when Bencic retired in set 2. Bencic also won on a hard court in 2014 in 2 sets.

Overall results favour Bencic in the last 12 months and also in 2019. Their clay results are quite even.

Kuznetsova reached the semi finals in 2017 and the final in 2015. She missed the first 3 months of 2019 but returned to the tour in Lugano, Switzerland on clay in April. She reached the quarter finals. She beat Aryna Sabalenka in the first round. Sabalenka is a top 10 player although clay isn’t her strongest surface. Kuznetsova won in 2 close sets.

Svetlana Kuznetsova

Bencic is having one of her best seasons. She reached the semis in Hobart and the third round at the Australian Open in January. She followed those up with the title in Dubai and a semi final finish in Indian Wells. All those results were on hard courts. On clay she made the quarter finals in Charleston. This is her first time in the second round in Madrid. She beat Alison Van Uytvanck in the last round.

Some value on Kuznetsova and I think we see 3 sets.  Lay Bencic around 1.40 and remove liability at 1.80. Lay the set 1 winner.

Update: Kuznetsova was broken in her second service game. She broke back for 4-4.  Bencic took the set in a tie break.  Kuznetsova easily won set 2 with 3 breaks of serve.  In the third set her serve deserted her.  She lost her first 3 service games. She broke back after the first two but couldn’t break again.

Bencic won 7-6, 2-6, 6-3.
