Due to start at 8:30
Martic 2.28, Kerber 1.77
Martic leads their previous matches 2-1. They last met at the French Open in May 2012. Kerber won on clay in straight sets. Martic won on clay In an ITF tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria in 2009.
Overall results favour Kerber in the last 12 months although their win percentages in 2019 are quite even.
Kerber doesn’t have a great record in Madrid. A quarter final in 2013 is her best result. She has had excellent results on hard courts this season. This week she beat Tsurenko in straight sets. Three of Tsurenko’s 5 games were breaks of serve.
Martic won the title on clay in Istanbul 2 weeks ago. In this tournament she beat Muguruza in the last round. She was only broken twice from the 10 break chances that Muguruza had. Her first serve was excellent. Muguruza didn’t serve badly but only saved 1 of the 4 break point she faced.
We have some value on Martic and she should be competitive. However she needs Kerber to be below her best to win this match. I think there is a very good chance that this goes to 3 sets. Back Kerber around 2.00.
