WTA San Jose, Quarter Final: Buzarnescu v Tomljanovic

Due to start at 8 pm

Buzarnescu 1.65, Tomljanovic 2.48

Buzarnescu won their only previous meeting.  That was in October 2017 on an indoor hard court in Linz, Austria. She won in 3 sets.

Overall results in the last 12 months and in 2018 favour Buzarnescu. Hard court results are a little better for Tomljanovic. This season she won 65% of her hard court matches compared to 57% for Buzarnescu.

Buzarnescu reached the final in Hobart in the second week of the season. She lost out to Mertens in 3 sets. Since then this is only the second hard court tournament where she has won a match. She has been favourite in both her matches this week but j=has needed 3 sets to get past Vickery and Anisimova.

Ajla Tomljanovic

Ajla Tomljanovic

Tomljanovic reached the semi finals of a couple of W%A Challenger tournaments in January and February. Both events had strong fields.  She reached the second round in Miami and quarter finals in Monterrey. She was comfortable in her first match this week but in the last round Lucky Loser Frech gave her a few problems. She also gave herself a few problems and faced 13 break points and was broken 5 times. Her second serve will need to improve. She hit 11 double faults in 3 sets.

I expect a close match and 3 sets seem likely.  Some value on Tomljanovic. Lay Buzarnescu if she breaks first or wins set 1,
