This will be the first time they have played.
I had predicted that Puig would have a great season but had not expected that she would win the gold in Rio. She hasn’t played since beating Kerber in the final. She will have faced a lot of disruptions to her normal schedule as there will have been a massive amount of press interest and interviews to take part in. Now she has to get her mind back on the day job.
Puig doesn’t have a good record at the US Open. She has played 5 matches there and has won just one. She has been underdog in her last 2 visits and lost to Venus Williams and Petkovic in 2015 and 2016 respectively. She lost both in 3 sets.
Zheng also lost in the first round last year and the second round in 2014. She was also underdog in both of her losses and she took Brengle and Safarova to a deciding set.
Obviously Puig’s confidence will be sky high but will her mind still be in Rio? Her success has pushed the price lower than it would have been.
I will be waiting for Puig to get broken before I back her. Losing her serve should snap her back to reality.
