Goerges 2.62, Stephens 1.61
Sloane Stephens leads their previous meetings 4-1. They last met in the Cincinnati quarter finals last month. Stephens won on a hard court in straight sets. Goerges won on clay in 2014. All Stephens’ wins were on hard courts.
Stephens has better results this year. Her season started at Wimbledon in July. Her recent form is a lot better than Goerges’. She has dropped just 1 set this week which was in the second round against Cibulkova.
Goerges has not lost a set so far and has only been broken once in 3 matches. She is having one of her best seasons and her consistency has been better than we normally see from her.
Some value on Goerges to take a set. Both players can play well in the early rounds and then fall apart with no warning. I favour Stephens to win a tight match. Back her if she gets broken or loses set 1.
Update: Stephens faced 0-40 on her serve in game 5 but held. She broken Goerges’ serve in the next game and that was enough to win the set. Goerges bounced back to level the match in set 2 but Stephens ran away with the deciding set with a double break.
Stephens won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
