Surprisingly they have only met once before. That was in July 2014 in Stanford, USA. Serena won in straight sets on a hard court. The opening set was close but Serena easily won the second set.
Serena finally lost a set in this tournament. Halep took her to a deciding set. She had been incredibly strong on serve in previous rounds but Halep had 9 break points and managed to break serve twice.
Pliskova has a weak record in grand slams. Her toughest match so far was against Venus Williams. She won that match in a 3rd set tie break. She comfortably beat Konjuh in the quarter final.
To have any chance at all Pliskova needs to have superb night from the service line. I think her style of play suits Serena quite well. There is nothing quirky about her style of play and Serena will enjoy the power of Pliskova’s ground strokes as she can redirect them and use her opponent’s power against her.
I feel Serena starts a little low at 1.22. It could be worth a speculative lay around 1.15 as we could easily see a higher price but its hard to see Serena losing this. If Pliskova gets into a winning position she is likely to choke away her chance of a first slam final.
