WTA US Open, Women’s Final: S. Williams v Osaka

Starts at 9 pm.

Williams 1.41, Osaka 3.40

Osaka won their only previous meeting in Miami in March. She won in straight sets on a hard court.

Return stats for the tournament are pretty much identical. Osaka has a slight lead in service holds, She held in 92% of her service games compared to 89% for Williams.  Both players dropped their only set of the tournament in the 2nd set of their 4th round match.

The main obvious difference between the players is their experience of the big matches. This is the first time Osaka has been past the fourth round of a slam. She made the fourth round at the Australian Open in January.

Serena Williams

Serena Williams

Serena has started slowly in the last 2 rounds and was broken at the start. of each match.

A first grand slam final is a huge deal for any player and so often we see them fail badly. Osaka hasn’t shown too many signs of nerves so far but it is Serena Williams on the other side of the net. She has beaten her this year but Serena was nowhere near her best in March.

Once again I am going to wait for Serena to be broken before backing her. I don’t think Osaka will flop in the final.
