WTA Western and Southern Open, Cincinnati, 1st round: Errani v Vandeweghe (19:00)

The only previous time they met was at Wimbledon 2012. Errani won comfortably in straight sets.

Errani has had a poor season over all. She has had her problems on serve. She has never had the biggest serve on tour but she has played around with the service action which didn’t work. Since June she has been a little more consistent. She reached the 3rd round in Rio last week.

She has never managed to win more than 1 match in a Cincinnati tournament. She lost in the first round to Gavrilova last year.

Vandeweghe had a poor clay season which wasn’t a huge surprise. She did very well on grass with a title in Holland and a 4th round at Wimbledon. Her only recent hard court tournament was in Stanford in July.  She won her first match but retired in the second round.

Last year in Cincinnati she won her first match these in 4 visits but lost her 2nd round match to Safarova in straight sets.

Hard courts stats slightly favour Errani this year but they are very closely matched. I see some value on Errani and think we will see 3 sets.
