WTA Zhengzhou, Semi Final: Martic v Mladenovic

Due to start at 8:30 am

Petra Martic 1.59, Kristina Mladenovic 2.62

Martic leads their previous matches 3-1. The last time they played was at the French Open in May this year. Martic won on clay in straight sets. She won their last 3 matches including their only hard court match in Miami in March 2018. Mladenovic’s win was due to Martic retiring.

Overall results favour Martic in the last 12 months and also in 2019. Her hard court results are also stronger than Mladenovic’s.

Martic has served well this week. In each of her first 2 matches she was broken twice. In the quarter final against Aryna Sabalenka she also served well although her serving dipped a little as Sabalenka put her under more pressure. She stepped up again in their deciding set and was not broken.

Mladenovic didn’t face a single break point in the first round against Ying Ying Duan.  In the second round Caroline Garcia had just 3 break chances and took 2 of them. Mladenovic beat her in straight sets. Her toughest test came in the quarter final against Svitolina. Svitolina has looked a little weary this week which isn’t entirely surprising after her excellent run at the US Open. She did put Mladenovic under a lot of pressure and had 15 break chances. She converted 6 of them.  Mladenovic hit 12 double faults.

Stats for the tournament are very even. Back Martic around 1.90.

Update: Strong performance from Martic but Mladenovic was poor. Martic won 6-0, 6-3.
