WTA Sydney international, Quarter Final: Barty v Mertens

Due to start at 3:30 am

Barty 1.52, Mertens 2.88

This will be the first time they have played.

Overall results slightly favour Barty  in the last 12 months. She also leads on hard courts 71% v 62% matches won.

Barty beat Halep in straight sets in the last round. It was Halep’s first match of the season. Halep put her under a lot of pressure and had 11 break chances but could only convert 2 of them.

Mertens played  2 matches yesterday to catch up from rain delays earlier in the week.  That wont have helped her energy levels so early in the season when match fitness can be an issue.

Back Barty at 1.75. the home crowd should give a boost if she needs it.

Update: Barty was broken in the third game of the first set but immediately broke back. She went on to take the set.  In set two Barty broke first but it was her turn to be broken straight back. Another two breaks of serve were enough to give her the match.

6-3, 6-3.

WTA Sydney International, Quarter Final: Giorgi v Radwanska, 8am

Giorgi 2.26, Radwanska 1.77

Head to heads are 1-1. They last met in Katowice, Poland on an indoor hard court. Giorgi won that semi final in straight sets. Radwanska’s win was at Wimbledon in June 2012. She won in 2 sets.

Radwanska had a poor season last year but did reach the final of this tournament. Their hard court results were very similar last year with 60% of matches won. In the first round she played Britain’s Johanna Konta in a repeat of last year’s final. Konta won the final but this time she was carrying an injury and it was Radwanska who took the match in straight sets. In the second round Radwanska had a tight opening set with Catherine Bellis which she took in a tie break. She took the second set 6-0.

Giorgi has come through the qualifying rounds and beat Stephens and Kvitova in the main draw. Both those opponents gave her a lot of help with unforced errors. Even so, Kvitova served for the opening set but was broken and Giorgi took the set in a tie break.

I think this goes to 3 sets so we have some value on Giorgi to take a set. Back Radwanska if she gets broken first or if she loses set 1.
