WTA Madrid Open, Semi Final: Stephens v Bertens

Due to start at 7 pm

Stephens 1.96, Bertens 1.50

Stephens has won both their previous matches. The last time they met was in the round robin stages of the year end Championships in Singapore on October 2018.   Stephens won in 3 sets on an indoor court.  She won on clay in 2013 in Rome in 3 sets.

Bertens has better overall results in the last 12 months and also in 2019. This season she leads 72% v 67% matches won. Both players have excellent clay results. Stephens has a slightly better win percentage on clay.

Bertens reached the final last season. She played an excellent match to beat Kvitova in the last round. That win was revenge for Kvitova beating her in the 2018 final.  She had also been beaten by Kvitova in the semi finals in Stuttgart 2 weeks ago. She has good results on all surfaces this season including an indoor title in St Petersburg at the end of January.

Stephens reached the third round last season which equalled her best Madrid result.

This week she has good wins over in form Martic who looked a little tired after playing a lot of tennis in the last month, and over Azarenka who pushed Stephens to 3 sets.

We have a very good chance of seeing 3 sets. Stats for the tournament all favour Bertens. Back her around 1.80.

WTA Madrid Open, Third Round: Garcia v Kvitova

Due to start at 7 pm.

Garcia 3.40, Kvitova 1.40

Head to heads are 3-3.  They last played in March this year on a hard court in Miami. Kvitova won in straight sets. Their last 4 matches have been won alternatively so today is Garcia’s turn!

Overall results favour Kvitova in the last 12 months and also in 2019. Her clay results have also been stronger.

Kvitova is the defending champion this week after she beat Kiki Bertens in 3 sets in last year’s final. She is having an excellent season and has won 26 of her 32 matches. She is unbeaten on clay in 2019 and won the title in Stuttgart 2 weeks ago. She has not lost a set so far in the tournament.

Garcia has not made her best start to a season. She has won 10 of her 19 matches. Third round finishes at the Australian Open and Miami are her only highlights before this tournament. She has 2 decent wins so far this week beating Su-Wei Hsieh in straight sets and Sonora Cirstea in 3.

I don’t think Garcia is going to get her turn. Back Azarenka if she goes a break behind or if she loses set 1.
