WTA Championships, Zhuhai: Kenin v Riske

Sofia Kenin 1.65, Alison Riske 2.50

Round Robin Stage

Due to start at 12 Noon

This will be their first meeting.

Overall results in 2019 favour Kenin. She has not played many indoor matches and has won just 2 of her 7 indoor matches as a pro. Riske has a much better indoor record but has only played 1 indoor match since 2014!

Kenin has won 70% of her matches this season. She has had a very strong run on hard courts recently. In August she reached 2 semi finals and reached the 3rd round at the US Open. September saw her win the title in Guangzhou plus a quarter final in Zhengzhou and a 3rd round finish in Wuhan. In her last tournament she reached the 3rd round in Beijing. She has taken the last couple of weeks off for a much deserved rest.

Riske has won 62% of her matches in 2019. After a strong grass season in which she won the title in Hertogenbosch and reached the quarter finals at Wimbledon she has also had some excellent results on hard courts. Her list of hard court results are not as impressive as Kenin’s although she reached the final in Wuhan last month. She has also had wins over Muguruza, Kerber, Svitolina and Kvitova.

Both have played well recently and this should be a tight match. Lay Kenin if she breaks and remove liability when Riske breaks back. Back Kenin around 2.20. Three sets seem likely.

WTA China Open, Beijing, Second Round: Bencic v Venus Williams

Belinda Bencic 1.49, Venus Williams 2.98

Due to start around 11 am

Venus Williams leads their previous matches 4-1. Their last meeting was at th Australian Open last season. Bencic won in straight sets on a hard court.  All their matches have ended in 2 sets.

Venus was a set and a break up in the last round against Barbora Strycova but came close to losing the match. In the end she came through a messy 3rd set 7-5. Since reaching the quarter finals in Cincinnati in August she has not been at her best. She started the season well enough but since March has struggled for consistency.

Bencic has better overall results in the last 12 months and also in 2019. Her hard court results are also stronger. She reached the semi finals at the US Open losing in 2 very tight sets to eventual champion Bianca Andreescu. She has been much more consistent than her opponent and has performed well on all surfaces.

I have to give the edge to Bencic. Back her around 1.85. Chance of 3 sets.
