WTA Zhengzhou, Second Round: Zheng v Riske

Due to start at 4 pm. Rain has delayed the start of the day’s matches as I write this.

Saisai Zheng 2.52, Alison Riske 1.64

Riske leads their previous matches 4-2. The last time they met was a year ago in Hiroshima. Zheng won on a hard court in straight sets. She has won their last 2 hard court matches.

Their 12 month results are pretty even. even. Riske has been a little better than Zheng in 2019. Hard court results are close but Zheng leads in the last 12 months and Riske has a small lead in 2019.

Riske had an excellent win over Angelique Kerber in the last round.  There were 20 breaks of serve in that match, 10 for each player. Riske finally took the match in a 3rd set tie break.

Zheng beat Bibiana Schoofs in the last round. She won in straight sets but the opening set went to a tie break. She has not been in her best form since winning the title in San Jose in July on hard courts. She has an excellent record in Zhengzhou and is the defending champion. She also reached the semi finals in 2017.

This should be competitive. I have to favour Riske.  Lay Riske if she breaks first. Back her around 1.90.

WTA Bronx Open, New York, Quarter Final: Siniakova v Pera

Due to start at 4 pm

Siniakova 1.59, Pera 2.58

Siniakova has won both their previous matches. They last played in Sydney in January this year. She won on a hard court in straight sets. Both their matches were on hard courts.

Over all results are a little better for Pera.  Their 12 month hard court results favour Siniakova. They are even in 2019.

Pera was given a wild card this week. She has been the underdog in both rounds. Kudermetova had a really poor match in the first round and took just 2 games from Pera. Strycova gave her a few more problems and took their first set. Pera then took control and lost just 3 more games.

Siniakova has been serving better than usual this week. Yafan Wang had a pretty bad day on serve in the first round. Five double faults and she won just 7 of her 27 second serve points. In the second round Potapova was injured and retired when 6-0, 3-0 behind.

Pera can be competitive and can take this to 3 sets. Lay Siniakova if she breaks first. Back her around 1.90.

WTA Bronx Open, New York: Pera v Strycova

Due to start at 5:30 pm

Pera 2.30, Strycova 1.75

Barbora Strycova won their only previous meeting.  That was at the Australian Open in January 2018. She won in straight sets on a hard court.

Their overall results are quite even in the last 12 months and in 2019. Bernarda Pera has a small edge on hard courts.

Pera easily beat Kudermetova in the last round. She was the underdog but lost just 2 games. She had lost to Kudermetova last week in straight sets. Most of her hard court wins in 2019 have been in qualifying rounds. She reached the second round at the US Open last year so is perhaps more interested in having a decent run this week.

Strycova reached the 3rd round at the US Open last year. Her best hard court result this season was a 3rd round in Doha in February. She has had some tough opponents in the hard court tournaments since then. Last week she lost in the qualifying rounds but was given a Lucky Loser place in the main draw where she lost to Kasatkina in 2 sets

We have some value on Pera and I think this goes to 3 sets. Lay Strycova around 1.40 to 1.50 and remove liability at 1.95. I give Pera the edge to win.

Update: Good recovery from Pera from losing set 1. She won 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
