14th April 2014 – Monte Carlo first round

My laptop is running like a dog on half RAM. Very frustrating when in a rush! Have a larger RAM module (right word?) for the one remaining RAM slot coming tomorrow hopefully.

Rain in Kuala Lumpur has got the day off to a slow start but Monte Carlo weather should be fine.

Monte Carlo, 11:30Donskoy has come through the qualifying rounds. He has two close matches and in his last one he beat Carreno Busta in a third set tie break.

Rosol reached the quarter finals in Dubai where he lost to Federer. He won the Challenger  in Irving, USA having been knocked out by Murray in the first week of Indian Wells. He then lost to Thiem in the first round in Miami.

Rosol hasn’t been on clay for a while so he may take a few games to make the transition from hard courts. he will of course have been practicing on the clay but there is no substitute for match practice.

I think Donskoy will make the better start and that we will probably see three sets. I am slightly favouring the Russian to get the win as I think Rosol needs a match to find his timing on clay.

Monte Carlo, 13:30Ramos has been in decent form on the clay this season. He was disappointing in his last match though against Granollers.

Today’s opponent is Nieminen who reached the quarter finals last year beating Del Potro and losing in 2 tight sets to Djokovic.

I want to back Nieminen here and evens is very tempting. This is his first match on clay for a while and I think he may struggle in the opening games. As long as he doesn’t take too long to get used to the courts I do expect him to come through.

Part stake at evens on Nieminen and i will add the rest if Ramos goes a break ahead.

Monte Carlo, 15:30Robredo starts at 1.37 against Goffin.

Robredo crashed out of Houston in his first match. he lost to Giraldo in straight sets as a 1.40 favourite.

Goffin had a couple of good wins in the qualifying rounds although Istomin retired early in the second set.

Goffin is not anywhere as good on clay as Giraldo and it will take a really poor performance from Robredo for him to lose this one.

I’d like a little higher price before backing though and anything approaching 1.60 would be perfect.
