ATP Monte Carlo, 13:30 – Djokovic v Berdych
Berdych is in great form and has taken a set from Djokovic in both their previous clay matches. The problem for him today is that this is a final. his record in finals is poor winning just 2 of his last 10.
In contrast his opponent’s record is superb in finals. Since he lost to Andy Murray in the Wimbledon final in 2013 only Nadal and Federer have taken finals from him.
What a great match we had in the semi final between Djokovic and Nadal. Nadal took an early break lead but Djokovic was soon level and from there he always looked a step ahead of the Spaniard.
Berdych out played Monfils in their semi final. I had expected a drop in level from Monfils (Berdych was my Shark Tips selection) and this proved to be the case. The Frenchman had no response to Berdych’s power and consistency and despite the occasional big winner he was never really in contention.
Djokovic starts at 1.09 which is no value. It is worth laying him for a trade but Djokovic needs to have a really bad match if Berdych is going to take the title.
WTA Copa Claro Colsanitas, 17:00 – Pereira v Shvedova
First WTA final for both players. Pereira has a lot more experience of finals though and won an ITF title last week.
Pereira knocked out the top seed Svitolina in straight sets in the semi final. She has had a b=great week so far. She has caused her opponents real problems. In the quarter final she won the first 9 games against Lino after their match was delayed by rain. She handled the delay much better though her serve started to fall apart in the second set with her losing a 4-1 lead. She broke against at 4-4 and held for the match.
Shvedova struggled in her first match and needed 3 sets to get past Zanevska. She dealt easily with Vickery and had a very solid straight sets win over Puig in the quarter final. Duque Marino had to finish her Quarter final off before playing the semi final after the rain delays. Not surprisingly Shvedova took the opening set but Marino took the second and pushed her very close in the deciding set.
I am going with Pereira to take a close match. There could be few early price swings as both will be nervous.
