WTA BNP Paribas Open, 18:00 – Tsurenko v Jankovic
They have never met. The 3 month stats favour Tsurenko.
Tsurenko is in great form and has already beaten Bouchard, Petkovic and Cornet. She had an slight ankle injury in her last match so watch out for a recurrence today. She has come through the qualifying rounds and has played 6 matches already although they are spread over 10 days. Four of her 6 matches have been 3 setters though and that ankle injury could be due to some tough matches.
This has been Jankovic’s best tournament of the year. She has had injury and confidence issues but her wins have really helped with the confidence.
Expect another 3 setter. A third set is likely to be messy with lots of breaks. I give a slight edge to Jankovic but she starts too low at 1.59.
Wait for a better price on Jankovic.
Irving Challenger, 17:00 – Thiem v Bedene
They have never met. The 3 month stats favour Bedene.
Thiem made a slow start to 2015 and people thought he had found his form when he beat Gulbis. However since then he has had a couple of losses as favourite and needed 3 sets to beat Sela in the 1st round this week. Sela had 17 break points but was only able to take 4 of them.
Bedene played a solid match to beat Ram in straight sets in first round. Thiem will have to serve a lot better if he is to win this one.
The sets will be close and I give a slight edge to Bedene unless Thiem sorts that serve out.
