WTA Connecticut Open, 17:00 – Tsurenko v Strycova

The 12 month hard court stats all favour Tsurenko. She has won 8 of her last 10 matches. She only won 1 games in her qualifying match with Putintseva but I am sure she knew she had a lucky loser place in the main draw due to Halep withdrawing. In those situations players often allow their opponent to go through the main draw too.

Strycova beat Giorgi in the last round. The Italian had one of her unforced error days and hit 14 double faults. She reached the quarter finals last year. Her form hasn’t been great since the tour moved to the USA but she has points to play for tonight.

Value is on Tsurenko. I think we see 3 sets.

Lay Strycova below 1.40.

ATP Winston-Salem Open, 20:00 – Lu v Garcia Lopez

Garcia Lopez leads 3-2. Their most recent match was last season. Lu won on an indoor hard court in 2 sets. Garcia Lopez beat him at last year’s US Open in 3 easy sets.

The 12 month hard court stats favour Garcia Lopez in everything except service holds.

Garcia Lopez has had a decent season but his more recent results have been affected by injury. Perhaps he pushed his body past its limits but he has lost some unexpected matches as strong favourite. He retired from his last match in July. He has had time to recover though he will be short of match practice.

Lu has put in some respectable performances but has only rarely strung a few wins together. He reached the semi finals of this tournament last year and the quarter finals in 2013.

I think this will be very close and especially so if Garcia Lopez is over his injury. Three sets look likely.

Back Lu if he goes a break behind. He has more to play for and Garcia Lopez must be rusty.

WTA Connecticut Open, 01:30 – Safarova v Begu

Begu won their only previous meeting. That was last season on an indoor hard court and she won in 3 sets.

Safarova beat Gavrilova yesterday in straight sets. Her first serve was effective when it found the court but she only got 47% of her first serves in. I’d also expect to see  more than the 2 aces she hit.

Begu’s serve was a little more consistent in her win over Diyas. She was still broken 5 times.

I expect Safarova to put the Begu serve under more pressure than Diyas did. Back Safarova  when she goes a break behind.
