Paris Masters, 10:00 – Youzhny v Giraldo
Youzhny was the defending champion last week in Valencia but lost his opening match to Bellucci in straight sets. Last year he was injured after Valencia and went out in the first round in Paris so he has an opportunity to pull back some points with a decent run this week.. I am not sure he is in the best shape mentally though.
Since reaching the quarter final in Washington Giraldo has had just 1 week where he hasn’t lost in the first round. That was 4 tournaments ago in Shenzhen where he reached the semi final.
Head to heads are 3-0 to Youzhny. Despite the fact that he has lost in the first round in Paris on his last 5 visits he really needs some points from this week. He starts at 1.49 but I will sit out for 2 or 3 games to try to assess how interested Youzhny is. In a few of his recent matches he has been broken very early but has broken straight back.
Paris Masters, 14:00 – Young v Verdasco
Young has had to play 2 qualifying rounds so will be used to the courts.
Verdasco doesn’t have a spectacular record in Paris but usually makes it to the second round. With the exception of 2012 when he retired against Querrey in the first round he has had and lost to strong opposition in his 5 other most recent visits. Gasquet, Berdych, Monfils, Cilic and Murray were not lucky draws.
Verdasco has won both their previous meetings including on clay this season. Young has not yet won a set from him.
Verdasco starts at 1.59 . Young has been serving well but has fallen each time he faces strong opposition. i think we will see a better price on Verdasco but the Spaniard should come through in 3 sets.
