ATP German Tennis Championships, 12:00 – Nadal v Fognini
Nadal leads their previous matches 4-2. Fognini has won both their 2015 meetings. Both were on clay. He even won in Barcelona in front of Nadal’s home crowd.
Nadal wasn’t in good shape mentally when they met earlier this season. He is still not
at his best but has looked much improved this week. He made very short work of his semi final with Seppi playing the type of tennis we expect from him on this surface.
Fognini has looked focused this week and has played some great tennis at times. He has had to work hard for his service holds though. He lifts his game against Nadal and I think this will be a decent match.
If Fognini can again raise his performance he can take this to 3 sets but Nadal looks better placed to take the match and get a little revenge for their last 2 matches.
Back Nadal if Fog takes set 1.
ATP Atlanta Open, 20:00 – Isner v Baghdatis
Isner has won all 5 of their previous meetings. Their most recent match was in 2013. That was on a hard court and he won in 3 sets. Their opening set in their last 2 meetings went to tie breaks.
Isner’s record at this event is superb. He is the defending champion. In his 6 visits to Atlanta he has only once failed to reach the final.
Baghdatis is playing above his average level. The head to head record makes tonight’s task tough mentally. He has beaten big servers in the last 3 rounds. To beat Muller in a third set tie break was impressive as Muller’s tie break record is very strong on hard courts.
I expect Baghdatis to take a set today and it is likely to be in a tie break. Back Isner if Baghdatis wins set 1. He lost the opening set against Kudla in the last round.
Value is on Baghdatis for a trade though I expect Isner to take the title. You can lay Isner around 1.25 without us seeing a break.
