7th April 2014

Four tournaments this week. Plenty to get our teeth into. As usual though there are still qualifying matches to complete so a smallish list of main draw match ups for us. Qualifiers are covered by Betfair but tend to have low liquidity.

WTA Katowicz, 13:00Barthel leads the head to heads 2-1 over Beck but Beck won their only recent meeting. That was in February in Doha and she won in straight sets.

It’s easy to see why Beck is favourite but 1.43 would be a very brave price to back her. Barthel retired from her first round match in Miami. She hasn’t been starting matches too badly but has thrown away leads in recent matches.

Barthel’s retirement is a worry but a small lay on Beck at the start is worth a go. However I will be switching to Beck at a higher price (hopefully!) as I expect her to get the win.

WTA Bogota, 16:30 – Proper red clay. None of this green rubbish. Lino and Pereira have met just once before. That was in Bastad last year on clay and Lino won in 3 sets.

Lino has been having a nightmare on the hard courts but has managed a few decent wins on the clay. Last week didn’t end well for her though as she didn’t manage to win a single game against the eventual champion Petkovic.

Pereira had a little more success and beat Cirstea in Charleston before being outplayed by Hantuchova.

I think going into this one Pereira’s confidence should be a little higher. She reached the semi final last year as a qualifier so will have great memories of the venue. She starts as slight favourite and I’ll have part stake on her from the start. I will add more if she gets broken early.

ATP Houston, 20:00 – Wild Card Williams takes on Dustin Brown. They start at evens.

Brown has more flair and variety of ground strokes. He can improvise really well IF he is playing well. He hasn’t played on clay for a while but has won 6 of his last 7 on the dirt.

Williams has had a couple of quarter finals in this American swing of the tour but that was on the hard courts.  He did reach the semi final last year though.

If Brown has one of his inspired matches he can win this  but we never know which version of Brown will show up. I think I’ll risk part stake on Brown from the start and wait to see how he’s performing.
