WTA China Open, 09:00 – Lucic Baroni v Muguruza
Head to heads are 1-1. The most recent was on grass in June this season. Muguruza won in 3 sets. Lucic Baroni’s win was in the 2014 US Open.
If Muguruza’s ankle is ok then she should have enough to win this comfortably. I still don’t trust that ankle though and will watch the early games to see how she is moving. If she seems to be nervous about running wide or to the net then stay away.
WTA China Open, 12:30 – Ivanovic v Kuznetsova
Ivanovic leads their previous encounters 10-4. She has won their last 4 meetings. The most recent was in August 2014. She won on a hard court in 3 sets.
Both their matches last year went to 3 sets. In 13 of their 14 matches the player taking the first set won the match.
Ivanovic played great tennis to beat a slightly tired Venus in the last round. She served well and looked confident even when she went behind.
Kuznetsova beat Stephens in the last round in 3 sets. She faced 13 break points in that match and was broken 4 times. She has been hard to gauge recently.
I do favour Ivanovic for this but her price is too low. Kuznetsova can keep it very close.
Back Ivanovic if she gets broken first. She was a break behind in both sets against Venus.
