Tsonga leads their previous matches 3-2. Gulbis has won their last 2 including their most recent on an Indoor hard court in February 2014. They never met on clay.
Gulbis has found some consistency this week. He hasn’t dropped a set. It shows how he so often wastes his immense talent.
Tsonga surprisingly needed 5 sets to beat Baghdatis in the last round. That won’t help his energy levels for what could be a long match today. We could easily see 4 or 5 sets but Tsonga has more mental strength for when the really big points come along.
Tsonga has an excellent record at the French Open with two semi finals in the last 3 seasons. The crowd will be right behind him as long as Gulbis doesn’t look like running away with the match.
Back Tsonga if he loses the opening set which I feel is quite likely.
