Due to start at 2:15 pm
Wawrinka 1.69, Cecchinato 2.42
This will be their first meeting.
Overall results favour Wawrinka this season. Clay results favour Cecchinato in the last 12 months although Wawrinka missed most of last season.
Wawrinka beat Pouille in the last round. He was broken once in 2 sets. He is a former champion in Monte Carlo. He won in 2014. He also reached the quarter finals in 2016. If he is injury free he is one of the best clay courters in the game.
Cecchinato only had to play 4 games in the last round as Dzumhur retired. Last year he had to go through the qualifying rounds. He made it to the main draw and lost to Raonic in the second round. Earlier this season he won the ATP title on clay in Buenos Aires. Last season he reached the semi finals at the French Open and won ATP titles in Budapest and Umag.
The sets should be tight but I favour Wawrinka. Back him around 1.85. We have a fair chance of 3 sets.
Update: Wawrinka won the first 8 games to take a set and a break lead. He held on to the break in set 2 and served for the match. He was broken, lost the set and lost the match in 3 sets. Cecchinato won 0-6, 7-5, 6-3.
