ATP Wimbledon, 2nd round: Chardy v Johnson (14:00)

Johnson won their only previous meeting. That was in August 2011. He won in Cincinnati on a hard court in straight sets.  The sets were very tight in the 7-6, 6-4 win.

Johnson won the title last week in Nottingham. He had won titles before but that was his first on the main ATP tour.  He has been serving at a very high level.  In his first round match he won in 3 tight sets. He was broken 4 times which suggests he was feeling the effects of a long week in Nottingham. Players often struggle with concentration after a title win.

Chardy was 2 sets to 1 down in his first round match with Monfils. He lost just 3 games in sets 4 and 5.  Chardy’s form has been up and down this year. He has reached 3 quarter finals and made the third round at the French Open.  He wins 50% of his matches on grass. His best result at Wimbledon was a 4th round finish in 2014.

Johnson has had a day to rest and rain delays are likely to give him some extra recovery time. I think Chardy will take a set but if Johnson can serve like he did last week then Chardy isn’t going to have a lot of chances.

Johnson starts around 1.60 . Wait for 1.80.
