Australian Open – Friday

Midnight – Jankovic v A Bondarenko

Rankings are 8 and 30. Head to heads are 7-0 to Jankovic.

Jankovic has been in decent form and looking at the H2H stats is an obvious favourite. I rarely back the fave in women’s matches but this is one thats tempting. She SHOULD win but I would recommend watching the first few games before committing money to the market.

As normal, 15-40 opportunities should be taken, especially in Jankovic’s favour.

I’d expect her to win its just a case of how well Bondarenko can stick with her.

Jankovic to win in straight sets.

Update: Bondarenko stuck with her quite well! This match shows why I rarely back the favourite from the start of the match in WTA games.

Bondarenko won 6-2, 6-3.

04:00 – Isner v Monfils

Rankings are 28 and 12. Head to heads are 2-1 to Isner.

The market has Monfils as a strong favourite at 1.45 but I think the market has it wrong. I predicted before the tournament that this could be where Monfils struggled. Isner’s confidence is sky high and although he had a fight in the first round when he was taken to 5 sets by Seppi he will be looking forward to this one.

Monfils blows hot and cold and had done just enough in his first 2 matches with all 6 sets being 6-4.

It will be a match dominated by serve and the loser will be the one whose serve lets them down. Expect a tie break or two and a close match. I give a slight edge to Isner.

Watch the opening 2 or 3 games. I’d be looking to back whoever seems confident on serve. Monfils’ head can go down if he goes behind and doesn’t often fight back from a big deficit. Isner seems to get stronger as the pressure increases.

Isner to win in 4 sets ( dont quote me on that! )

Update: Ok you can quote me on it now.  A very one sided first set went to Isner. The second went to Monfils.

The next 2 sets went to tie breaks and Isner held his nerve to win them both.

Inser won in 4 sets, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.

06:00 – Cilic v Wawrinka

Rankings are 14 and 19. Head to heads are 4-1 to Wawrinka. Cilic won their last match which was 2 weeks ago. 3 of the 4 Wawrinka wins were on clay.

Wawrinka has been in the better form this week. Cilic was taken to 5 sets in the last round by a bloke called Bernard.

Cilic relies heavily on his serve and it hasn’t been firing so far. If that trend continues tonight it will be Wawrinka who wins. Wawrinka does tend to throw in a bad match every now and then but I think he will be motivated to get a little revenge for this month’s defeat in Chennai.

As usual watch the opening games to get a feel for today’s form. If Cilic’s serve is working then its an obvious call to back him on serves. Wawrinka also has a fairly reliable serve and if Cilic seems to be faltering then backing Wawrinka’s service games should work well.

I’d expect a very close match with Wawrinka coming out on top.

Update: It was a close match but Cilic’s serve did its job. Wawrinka won the first set but Cilic went on to win the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

    1. Hi Rob,

The comment was a little flippant and perhaps unfair. I have seen the guy play and he is no mug. However he shouldn’t have taken the match to 5 sets.
