14:00 – Phau v Mayer
Rankings are 89 and 40. Head to heads are 2-1 to Phau although they haven’t played since 2006 when Mayer won in 3 sets.
Phau has been doing reasonably well on the Challenger tour with a couple of quarter final appearances. He also reached the quarters in Romania although that was on clay.
Mayer reached the final in Stockholm last week where he lost to Federer. He beat Soderling and nieminen enroute to the final. He also has a recent win over Youzhny.
They hold serve 69% and 80%. Phau posts better stats on return of serve.
There is a slight chance that Mayer will be fatigued after his great run last week. He also reached the third round the week before in Shanghai.
I have to go with Mayer as he seems to have hit a great vein of form. Federer commented on how well he played in the final.
Phau occasionally goes on short decent runs but they are usually on clay.
Back Mayer on serve. If he seems sharp at the start then backing him with a view to greening up after he breaks is an option.
Update: Mayer was clearly feeling the effects of playing a lot of tennis over the last 2 or 3 weeks. Added to that Phau played some inspired tennis and served well.
Phau won 6-2, 6-4.
