Barcelona Open – Monday

11:30 – Nieminen v Bellucci

Rankings are 68 and 31. Head to heads are 1-0 to Nieminen ( on a hard court)

Nieminen won a Challenger Tour event in March on clay and reached a quarter final the week after. On the main tour he hasn’t done so well and his last match against Monaco was full of unforced errors.

He serves a high percentage of first serves in but the serve often has no power.

Bellucci has stuck with the main tour events and whilst he hasn’t had much success he has put in some creditable performances.

His game perhaps is better suited to clay than his opponent’s.

Bellucci wins 79% of service games to Nieminen’s 78%.

Use Scalping and 15-40. I expect a Bellucci win.

Update: Bellucci won 6-4, 6-4.

17:30 – Gasquet v Andreev

Rankings are 79 and 55. Head to heads are 4-3 to Andreev ( 1-1 on clay ).

Gasquet had a good tournamant a couple of weeks ago reaching the quarter finals. Other than that he hasn’t had much success in 2010.

Andreev has had an unspectacular season so far but hasn’t really played that badly.

I’d expect quite a close match. If Gasquet’s mental state is right then he would be my favourite as his game works well on clay. However his last match didn’t go well with him winning just 2 games and that will have knocked his confidence.

So Andreev is my pick. Back him on serve or use Scalping.

Update: Andreev got off to a decent start but both players exchanged breaks of serve. The first set went to a tie break with both players having opportunities to take it. But it was Gasquet who showed that his mental state was spot on.

After Gasquet had won the first set there was a lengthy delay for rain. When play resumed they again swapped breaks in the early games but it was Gasquet who won the important one to take him to 5-4 and he was serving for the match.

Gasquet won 7-6, 6-4.

  1. It’s sad that Rafael Nadal decline to participate in this tournament, but it’s good that he will rest for bigger tournaments, I’m sure he will be back to the top 2 rank very soon!
