Bell Challenge 2012 – Wednesday

Wickmayer and Lauren Davis both won their first round matches in straight sets.

You’d expect Wickmayer to be too strong for the American but recent losses to Parmentier and Dellacqua make me think that her starting price of 1.34 is a little low. If Wick’s serve is a bit off today then this could be close but she should have enough class to come through in 2 sets. 1.60+ please.

Update: What the hell was Wickmayer doing there? Davies played well but Wick put up little or no resistance.

Davies won 6-1, 6-1.

Annika Beck meets qualifier Kristina Mladenovic. They have played just once before which was also on an indoor hard court. Mladenovic won in 3 sets having lost the first 6-0.

I didn’t expect Beck to get past Oprandi but the Swiss player didn’t seem fully fit. To be fair Beck played well though and I won’t be surprised to see 3 sets tonight. Very slight edge to Beck.

Update: Beck took the opening set but after the match went into a third set it was Mladenovic who came through on top.

Mladenovic won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Cibulkova plays her first round match with Flipkens tonight. They have played 3 times before with Cibulkova leading 2-1 although Flipkens won their most recent match which was on grass in June 2010.

Cibulkova’s form has taken a little dip recently and I think if Flipkens is up for this one she has a chance to at least keep it close. 1.32 is definitely a lay for me.

Update: Flipkens didn’t really compete in the first set and was broken right at the start. However as is so often the case a new set brought more success for the first set loser and the match went into a third set.

In the first game Cibulkova was broken but in the 6th, 7th and 8th games serve was broken to leave the set on serve. Another late break for Flipkens gave her the advantage and she served out the set and the match.

Flipkens won 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
