ATP Australian Open 2020, Men’s Final

Dominic Thiem 4.3, Novak Djokovic 1.29

Due to start at 8:30 am

Djokovic leads their previous matches 7-4. Their last match was at the year end ATP Finals in November. Thiem won on an indoor hard court in a third set tie break. He has won their last 2 matches and also 4 of their last 6. His other 3 wins were all on clay. They have met 3 times on hard courts with Djokovic winning them in straight sets.

Overall results favour Djokovic. He a better hard court game though Thiem also has excellent results on hard courts. Stats for the tournament are quite close but favour Djokovic in every category.

Thiem had a few wobbles in the early rounds but he won his fourth round match with Gael Monfils in straight sets. Next up was Rafa Nadal who Thiem had never beaten on a hard court. Thiem came through an entertaining match in 4 sets. His semi final with Alex Zverev was a nervy affair at times but the Austrian’s mental strength won him a place in the final.

Djokovic lost a set to Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round but has not lost another set since. Diego Schwartzman, Milos Raonic and Roger Federer all kept their sets close. Djokovic has been broken 3 times in the last 5 matches.

Roger Federer showed in the semi final how Djokovic doesn’t like to be rushed. I’m not sure Thiem has the game to play the way Federer did. Federer could only keep it up for a set and still lost in 3 sets. Against Zverev, Thiem dropped back way behind the base line to return serve. He was giving himself a little more time to return the Zverev serve. That won’t work against Djokovic. It leaves Thiem vulnerable to a short ball or to the ball being switched wide the other side. Really Thiem needs Djokovic to have a bad day which he doesn’t often have in the big matches. When Djokovic has under performed in the really big matches it has usually been due to illness or injury.

Despite all that I still think Djokovic is priced too low. It is worth a small lay around 1.20 to 1.25 and remove the liability around 1.40 to 1.50. Back Djokovic if he loses the first set.

TradeShark Diary – 1st February 2020

It has been a few weeks since my last diary post. I’ve been a bit busy! It’s nice to get the night shifts out of the way early in the year. I try to keep my working hours as close to “normal” as I can but it has still been 2, 3 and 4am finishes. That also limits the number of matches I get to trade. I have made more than normal per match which balances things out a bit.

Diary

It’s been a decent tournament this year. Kenin fought hard to take the Women’s title from Muguruza. Nice profit on that one to add to the Thiem v Zverev match yesterday. I haven’t done the write up for the men’s final yet. I’ll be doing that along with the youtube video a bit later.

I was a bit quick to think I was some sort of SEO wizz. It took me less than 2 days to cock it up. All good experience I suppose. I have learned a huge amount about Google and how they view and index websites. They “crawl” most sites with a mobile bot these days so your site has to work well on mobile phone screens. I had set up a page specifically for mobiles. If someone visited www.tradesharktennis.com on a mobile they would be sent immediately to mobile.tradesharktennis.com. Now Google don’t like sites to have identical titles and meta descriptions. You can tell Google which site they should give preference to when ranking pages and I thought I had things set correctly. I didn’t. I was close but close isn’t good enough. I corrected the error but while I was waiting for Google to re-index the 2 pages I thought I would be better tweaking the desktop version so that it displays on mobile screens.

That seems to have worked a treat! Google actually say that if you have a mobile version of your page you should have their titles and meta descriptions as well as content identical. It seems that as I didn’t do that before my pages were probably competing against each other for Google ranking places. Now I have just 1 page for both desktop and mobile users it seems to have improved the ranking.

Hopefully now we are back on better hours with the tournaments I can get back to recording some trading videos and I’ll get back to more regular diary posts.

its time watch a bit of football before start working on the Men’s Oz Open final.
