Over 50 matches today! 15 are scheduled to start at 10. Trading wise Its a shame they cram so many matches into the first week and we have hardly any in the second week.
Halep v Suarez Navarro stands out amongst the early matches. Both have been in great form and in particular Halep who reached the semi final in Rome having had to play the qualification rounds first. She played 7 matches that week!
The stats slightly favour Suarez Navarro who has also won both their previous clay court matches. I will be hoping to get a lay on Halep below 1.65 to 1.70.
Update: Suarez Navarro broke in the first game but went on to be broken herself 3 times to lose the set. In set 2 it was carla’s turn to be broken in the first game but she fought back to win in 3 sets.
Suarez Navarro won 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Mannarino v Cuevas is an interesting one. Mannarino is playing on home soil but doesn’t have a good record in France! He also has a poor record in best of 5 set matches.
Cuevas gets entry into the main draw via the protected ranking rule. He missed a lot of tour time through his shoulder injury. He has had a handful of wins in Challenger events and also the Davis Cup. He was ranked in the 50’s before the injury in 2011.
Mannarino starts as slight favourite but I think Cuevas can keep this competitive. I just hope he isn’t there for the pay cheque. A lower lay on Mannarino is the target but don’t use huge stakes.
Update: Tight as a duck’s doodah. Cuevas won 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
Oprandi is back in action after her final at the weekend. She started that final looking as if she wasn’t really bothered about being there and she paid the price. She can be a sulky player at the best of times and I don’t expect too much from her this week. Its a pity she is only playing Svitolina. Might be worth a small lay on Oprandi below 1.15 to 1.20 but watch out for her in the next round if she gets there.
Update: Oprandi lost the first set and went a double break down in the second. She fought back to 1 set each but only won 1 game in the third.
Svitolina won 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
Kerber starts as a strong favourite against Barthel. Kerber has said that she still isn’t over her injury and she hasn’t been able to practise her serve.
Barthel leads the head to heads 2-1 but isn’t great on clay.
This one is all about Kerber. Obviously if she plays her best tennis then she wins She made it to the quarter finals in Madrid but was just a passenger against Ivanovic. The tournament before that was in Germany and she reached the semi finals there losing to Sharapova in 3 sets.
Look for early signs in this match of discomfort especially during her serve. If she hits 1.15 to 1.20 early then an initial lay could be a good move with part stake.
Update: Kerber won 7-6, 6-2.
Wozniacki and Robson are on court this afternoon. Woz has been in woeful form and has lost 5 in a row on clay. Robson has been having a few problems herself and the split from her coach who said she didn’t work hard enough didn’t help. She has lost 8 of her last 9 matches when she started as favourite.
Robson did beat Venus Williams recently but having watched Williams yesterday that should be given minimal importance.
Wozniacki hasn’t left this tournament before the 3rd round since 2008. Her experience at the tournament is far greater than Robson but the stats favour the Brit. I think we have a fair chance of a 3 setter here with slight favour to Woz for me.
Update: A very poor match from Robson although Wozniacki looked a little like her usual self.
Wozniacki won 6-3, 6-2.
