The consistency of the players in the World Team Cup has been all over the place. Swinging their racquet like a world beater one match and then like an egg beater in the next.
We have Kohlschreiber against Youzhny. Both these players have been hot and cold. The head to head is strongly in favour of the German at 5-1 which included an easy straight sets win in Rome. Kohlschreiber on home soil definitely has the edge. Hopefully Youzhny will serve as badly as he did against Troicki and make our life that bit easier.
Tipsarevic plays Gimeno-Traver. Tips is at 1.93 on Betfair which suggests he is not 100% fit. Gimeno Traver beat Kohlschreiber in 3 sets earlier this week and Kohlschreiber beat Tipsarevic. If Tipsarevic isn’t 100% then I don’t know why he would risk playing the week before the French Open. This is one to watch at the start but going with gut feeling I think G-T will be stronger. Clay isn’t a good surface to be playing with an injury.
In Nice we have Dolgopolov v Hanescu. I didn’t see the Dologo/Ferrer match but Hanescu played really well in his win over Haase. Dolgopolov is 1.51 on Betfair which seems way too low. It has to be because he beat the number 2 claycourter in the world but 1.51?? Seriously? If Ferrer had been on top form he wouldn’t have been beaten. Dologopolov made 42 unforced errors in that match. Dolgopolov has been struggling with a stomach complaint and that must have taken a lot out of his body. A long 3 setter wityh ferrer won’t have helped him. I am favouring Hanescu for this one.
The other semi final in Nice is between Almagro and Berdych. Almagro played much bettr in his win over Andujar. he often ups his game in the latter stages of tournaments and he must fancy his chances of taking the title. Berdych started his match with Gulbis by going for his shots and didn’t hold back on serve. He needs to do the same again today. All 4 of their previous matches were on clay and berdych leads the head to head 3-1. Both were impressive yesterday but Berdych was the guy I was happiest to have my money on. I’ll be backing him today.
