Indian Wells – Thursday

19:00 – U Radwanska v Jovanovski

Rankings are 172 and 52. Head to heads are 2-0 to Jovanovski. Both matches were last month and both went to 3 sets.  Also in both matches Radwanska won the opening set and the third set was very close.

Radwanska has been getting some tips from her sister and is playing above her ranking. Over the last 6 months she has held serve 67% of the time to Jovanovski’s 63%.

Stats for return of serve are very equal and break points converted are also similar.

I’ll be going with the pattern of the previous 2 matches and will lay Jovanovski from the start (currently 1.54). If Radwanska wins the first set I will then lay her. If however Jovanovski takes the opening set I will only lay her if the first set has been close.

If there is a 3rd set leave it alone!

Update: Jovanovski took the opening set but Radwanska levelled it at 1 set all. The third set as expected was close and was decided in a tie break.

Radwanska won 3-6, 6-4, 7-6.

23:00 – Schuettler v Haase

Rankings are 83 and 56. They haven’t played before.

Schuettler reached the final of the Challenger event in Dallas last week so is in decent form. He has a reputation for being supremely fit despite being the ripe old age of 34. In his last 3 matches on the main tour he has been excellent in the first set but then run out of steam and lost quite tamely in 3 sets.

Over the last 6 months Haase has held serve 83% to Schuettler’s 75%. When he is on form his serve is superb and there are few better.

Schuettler will make a game of it in the first set but I’ll be backing Haase in the second set.

Either back Haase on serve or back him from the start. If backing from the start take into consideration that Schuettler’s best set will be the opening one.

Update: A close opening set where towards the end both men were getting broken. Schuettler took the set in a tie break. In the second set Shuettler took an early 2-0 lead and Haase could be layed at around 1.20 . He then came back with 3 straight games to lead 3-2. At that stage he had treatment for a shoulder problem. As there were no live pictures its hard to know whether that affected his performance but he was getting regular treatment throughout that set. At 4-3 Haase had several break points but was unable to take them. Shuettler came out on top 7-6, 7-5.
