Japan Open – Final

05:00 – Nadal v Monfils

Rankings are 1 and 15. Head to heads are 6-1 to Nadal.

Nadal came about as close to losing his semi final as it would be possible to get without actually doing so. Troicki took the number 1 to a third set tie break and had a couple of match points. He had already choked when serving for the match at 6-5 but played superbly in the tie break and looked like he was going to cause an upset. Nadal found a way to win as all great champions do.

Monfils never really looked in trouble in his match against Stepanek and won it in straight sets with a very professional performance. Very un-Monfils-like!

A few players have found a way to trouble Nadal over the last 12 months and on current form Monfils could be another. The head to head stat is a tough one to get past though and Monfils has a terrible record in finals winning just 2 from his 10 appearances.

Nadal has better stats on serve and also on second serve returns. I don’t see him losing concentration like he did in the semi. The Spaniard knows how to win finals.

All their previous matches have only thrown up 1 tie break but Monfils is playing really well at the moment and his serve is solid. I will be suprised if the first set doesn’t go to a tie break.

Both can be backed on serve. I feel Monfils has a mental block when it comes to winning finals and I don’t think a Nadal final is ts going to change that.

Nadal to win in 2 tight sets or it may go  to three.
