Madrid Open 2013 – The Finals

A late post today as I haven’t been home long.

Rome starts today so there are a few first round matches to go at. As usual I will stick to the finals.

Williams didn’t look at her best again yesterday against Errani. The second set was easier for her but she will need to raise her level in the final.

Sharapova had a tough match with Ivanovic but you always felt like she was in control. She was better on serve than in the quarter final and will be able to take advantage of a below par Williams where the others couldn’t.

Williams leads the head to heads 12-2 and has won their last 11 matches.

Sharapova has looked the more stable this week but this is a final and they are playing for the number 1 ranking.

I expect Sharapova to at least take a set but I feel Williams will dig deep and her sheer will to win will come through in 3 sets. Expect a lot of intimidating roars from the Beast to compensate for her lethargy.

I will add a post on the mens final after I have had some breakfast!

Thats better!

Williams seems to be finding a way to win……..by winning every game. Currently 4-0 up!

Nadal and Wawrinka will meet in the Mens final.

Nadal leads the head to heads 8-0. They have had some tight sets in the past including tie breaks but Wawrinka has never taken a set from the Spaniard.

Wawrinka is playing at a consistently higher level than ever before. He has had a bit of an inferiority complex when facing the top players. He and his new coach seem to be making in-roads in that department but a first win over Nadal won’t come easily. However I’d say if he is going to get that win then now would seem to be his best opportunity to date.

Nadal’s fighting spirit is as strong as ever but his game, even on clay, looks vulnerable. Ferrer came so close to beating him and a fresh Wawrinka playing his aggressive style of play would have a great chance of at least getting his first set.

A concern is that Wawrinka has now has 2 tough 3 set matches in a row. I didn’t expect him to have enough energy reserves to get past Berdych in the semi final. In truth Berdych should have taken that third set. 4-2 up and a point for 5-2 on his own serve and my Facebook prediction of 2-1 Berdych was looking good. Stan was allowed to break and in fact took the next 3 games as well.

Nadal starts at 1.17 . If we’re going to see a higher price Wawrinka needs to put everything into the opening set. The trouble with that is that he won’t have the legs to get a second set.
