Madrid Open – Thursday

14:30 – Monaco v Almagro

Rankings are 27 and 35. Head to heads are 3-1 to Almagro ( 2-1 on clay)

Monaco’s form hasn’t been good prior to this week. He has been making fairly basic errors in many of his matches. However this week he seems to be back on track and has won both his matches easily.

Almagro had a great win against a below-par Soderling yesterday. He was definately given a boost by being infront of his home crowd. Normally its his backhand that is strongest but his forehand was equally impressive in the straight sets win over the Swede.

I have to give a definate edge to Almagro and his starting price of 1.62 is higher than I would have expected.

Almagro wins 84% of his service games. Add to that the quality of some of his play yesterday and I would expect a straight sets win.

Either back Almagro on serve or from the start.

Update: Almagro won 6-4, 6-1.

18:30 – Ferrer v Cilic

Rankings are 12 and 11. Head to heads are 2-1 to Ferrer. They haven’t played on clay.

Ferrer came through a very tough three set match last night against Baghdatis which will have given him a lot of confidence. His clay court season is going very well with a final appearance and 2 further semi finals.

Cilic is slowly getting used to the slower surface but usually takes a while to get going. He has had a few three set matches where he has lost the first set.

Ferrer will try to grind Cilic down whereas Cilic will try to finish points quickly if he can. Cilic will need his service to be on-song for him to have a chance today.

Watch the opening couple of games as there could be breaks early but after that back Ferrer on serve.

Once Cilic has his serve going, back him on serve too.

Ferrer has the edge due to home advantage.

Update: Ferrer won 6-3, 6-2.
