WTA Bronx Open, New York: Pera v Strycova

Due to start at 5:30 pm

Pera 2.30, Strycova 1.75

Barbora Strycova won their only previous meeting.  That was at the Australian Open in January 2018. She won in straight sets on a hard court.

Their overall results are quite even in the last 12 months and in 2019. Bernarda Pera has a small edge on hard courts.

Pera easily beat Kudermetova in the last round. She was the underdog but lost just 2 games. She had lost to Kudermetova last week in straight sets. Most of her hard court wins in 2019 have been in qualifying rounds. She reached the second round at the US Open last year so is perhaps more interested in having a decent run this week.

Strycova reached the 3rd round at the US Open last year. Her best hard court result this season was a 3rd round in Doha in February. She has had some tough opponents in the hard court tournaments since then. Last week she lost in the qualifying rounds but was given a Lucky Loser place in the main draw where she lost to Kasatkina in 2 sets

We have some value on Pera and I think this goes to 3 sets. Lay Strycova around 1.40 to 1.50 and remove liability at 1.95. I give Pera the edge to win.

Update: Good recovery from Pera from losing set 1. She won 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

WTA Wimbledon Third Round: Suarez Navarro v Bencic

Due to start at 1:30 pm

Suarez Navarro 2.48,  Bencic 1.66

Suarez Navarro won their only previous match. That was in Stuttgart in April 2015 on clay. She won in straight sets.

Their 12 month results favour Bencic although Suarez Navarro has been a little better in 2018. Bencic has 1 extra win this year on grass.

Bencic beat Alison Riske in 3 sets in the last round. Riske has had a superb grass season so far. Bencic saved 4 match points in their second set tie break.

Belinda Bencic

Suarez Navarro has not lost a set so far.  Before this week she had only won 2 or more matches in 3 tournaments. They were big tournaments and she made the quarter finals at the Australian Open and also in Indian Wells in March. She had a third quarter final on the clay in Madrid in May.

I favour Bencic to take this but wait for 1.90 before backing.

Update: Comfortable win for Bencic. She won 6-1, 7-6. The price didn’t quite hit the target and the highest was around 1.86.
