The qualifying rounds are finished off today and we also have the first round of the WTA event starting. The men start tomorrow.
The first round of qualifying gave some unexpected results yesterday. There were some excellent trading opportunities although liquidity was poor for the early stages of matches. We also had a rain delay in the evening and fingers crossed that we don’t get many more of those.
Erakovic starts as favourite against Begu at 1.64 . All things considered I have this more or less 50/50 . I will be looking for a lay of Erakovic below 1.30 but bear in mind they have both had recent retirements. Reduced stakes are advised but I think we have a decent chance of a worthwhile price swing. I’d expect Erakovic to edge the win.
Update: That didn’t pan out as I expected! The lower price for the lay on Erakovic didn’t happen. She made a terrible start to the match and won just 1 game in the opening set. She won the second set but it was Begu who took the decider.
Begu won 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Petkovic is playing her first main draw match since she lost to Venus Williams in the semi final in Luxembourg last October.
She starts at 1.63 against Jovanovski who reached the quarter finals of the Shenzhen Open in January and the 4th round of the Australian Open where she lost in 3 sets to Sloane Stephens. Jovanovski’s level can vary a great deal but on her day she can give Petkovic a lot of problems. Petkovic has shown glimpses of he old form but is well below her best. I will look to grab a lay on her below 1.40 .
Update: Easy win for Petkovic 6-3, 6-1.
In other first round matches Pennetta could struggle against Larsson. Pennetta is striving to find her touch after an enforced absence through injury. Larsson plays best on hard courts and is a fighter for as long as her confidence holds.
Larsson made the better start but didn’t make the most of it. Pennetta won 6-4, 6-1.
Heather Watson is underdog against Morita but I feel she has a better than average chance today.
Watson cruised to a set and double break lead. I think she had some sort of injury though and Morita came back to win in 3 sets.
Morita won 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.
