Monday 22nd October

Just 10 matches today but they’re pretty well spread out so we can get involved in all of them if we want to.

Being the last couple of weeks of the regular tour retirements and less than 100% effort from some players are more likely. Hanescu didn’t manage to get out of the tournament  as he retired from his qualifying match at 1-4 in the first set but is now in the main draw as lucky loser! I haven’t checked what he retired with but that seems bizarre.

Goffin starts at strong favourite against Andujar.  Even though Andujar is on home soil I agree that Goffin seems stronger on the hard courts.   His starting price of 1.47 seems too low though and I will wait for over 1.75 . Goffin won a recent Challenger event on hard courts whereas Andujar has had 3 first round exits in the last 3 weeks.  Obviously Andujar was playing higher ranked players but I still can’t back him here.

Update: Goffin got off to a great start as Andujar struggled with his serve, something that was to continue all match.

Goffin won 6-2, 6-2.

Similarly with Benneteau at 1.44 I agree he ought to win but I will feel more comfortable backing him around 1.70 or 1.80 against Kuznetsov.

Update: A poor start from Benny saw him broken early. he managed to break straight back but lost his serve again. Kuznetsov held on for the set. Benneteau just seemed to be struggling on his own serve and perhaps against the flow of the match broke serve in the second set. He took the set and then took control in the third.

Benneteau won 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The Dodig v Kohlschreiber match has had me scratching my head this morning. My initial thought was that Kohlschreiber should take this as Dodig hasn’t been in great form. The German leads the head to heads 2-0 . However he has lost in the first round in Valencia every time he has played there. Its possible he winds  down at this stage  of the season and as he has nothing to play for this week we may well see a half hearted performance from him.  It’s worth a small lay at 1.52.

Update Dodig won 6-2, 7-6.

Hewitt had a great week last week reaching the quarter finals in Stockholm. However I think his body will be hurting this week and Monaco isn’t the sort of player you want to be taking on when fatigued.  Monaco starts at 1.30 but 1.50 and above would be a bonus.

Update: This one cost me! Monaco had one of his bad serving matches. Hewitt served extremely well in the opening set and whilst his serving level dropped in the second set Monaco’s remained terrible.

Hewitt won 6-3, 6-4.
