Kudla v Sela:
Kudla has improved his ranking by 300 places in the last 12 months. He took the first set from Roddick a couple of weeks ago and pushed him close in the next 2 sets losing 7-6, 6-7, 4-6. He has reached the quarter finals of 2 recent Challenger events on hard courts.
Sela has lost 5 of his last 6 matches. In his last 2 appearances at delray Beach he has gone out in the second round.
Sela obviously has more experience but an up and coming American in America can be a tricky opponent.
Kudla doesn’t have the biggest serve in the world but Sela’s price of 1.55 just feels too short. I think part stake on from the start but I will hold some back to add if Kudla is able to trouble Sela ‘s serve early in the set.
Update: A poor quality match! Sela won 6-4, 6-3.
Sweeting v Young:
Young’s last match against Isner saw him trouble the big man’s serve. However as we saw against Melzer Isner wasn’t at his best from the service line. We have been waiting for Young to find the form of 2011. His 2 matches last week were better with all his 5 sets being very close ( 3 tie breaks and two 6-4’s). He has still to convince me though.
Sweeting reached the quarter finals last year having first come through the qualifying rounds. He lost in 3 sets to Nishikori.
Young also had to come through qualifying in 2011 and lost to Kavcic but was given a place in the main draw as Lucky Loser. He lost in the first round to Kevin Anderson.
I think this will be very close. It seems as though Young’s serve has been a little more stable in the last couple of matches but as always Sweeting can be a tricky opponent.
Neither has been progressing deep into tournaments and this is likely to be a 3 setter but I am givving a slight edge to Sweeting as he has shown slightly better recent form.
Update: Young served first and after a long game he finally took his 4th break point chance. The set had a few close games but it went to Sweeting. The second set saw no more fight from Young.
Sweeting won 6-1, 6-1.
