WTA Australian Open: Venus Williams v Buzarnescu

Due to start at 3 am

V. Williams 1.56, Buzarnescu 2.72

This will be their first meeting.

Venus Williams has slightly better overall results in the last year. Her recent form is also much stronger. She beat Serena in an exhibition match in December and reached the quarter finals in Auckland.

Venus Williams

Venus Williams

Buzarnescu only played 16 hard court matches in the last 12 months and won 8 of them. She has had a couple of tough opponents in 2019. She met Tsurenko in Brisbane and Bencic in Hobart.  Tsurenko played a very strong match but Bencic made a lot of mistakes.  She hit 11 double faults and was broken 6 times but won the match in 3 sets.

I have to favour Venus. She reached the final in 2017. She alternates a good Australian Open with a poor one. She lost in the first round last year!

Back her around 1.70.

Update: Venus lost a tight opening set in a tie break. In the second set they exchanged breaks and another late break gave Buzarnescu the chance to serve for the match. She was easily broken.

Venus took the second set in a tie break and easily took the third set.

She won 6-7, 7-6, 6-2.

WTA Australian Open: Diyas v Krunic

Due to start at Midnight

Diyas 1.49, Krunic 3.00

Diyas has won both their previous matches. Their most recent match was in an ITF grass final in June 2017. She won in straight sets. The other match was at the Australian Open in 2014. That one went to 3 sets.

Better overall results for Diyas last year. Krunic was very poor on hard courts. Diyas leads 58% v 30% matches won on hard in the last 12 months.

Zarina Diyas

Zarina Diyas

Diyas beat Strycova last week in the Sydney qualifying rounds before losing to in form Putintseva.

Krunic has lost both her 2019 matches. She started as favourite against McHale in Brisbane and against Hon in Sydney.

Back Diyas around 1.70.

Update: Diyas was broken in the first game of the match and easily hit our target price early in set 1 and she went on to take the set.  In set 2 she was three times a break of serve ahead but was broken back each time. She was broken again and lost the set. Vekic took set 3 and won 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Plenty of chances to take a nice profit from this one.

WTA Australian Open: Watson v Martic

Due to start at midnight

Watson 3:15, Martic 1.45

This will be their first meeting.

Much stronger overall results for Martic in the last 12 months. On hard courts she leads 68% v 50% matches won.

Heather Watson won just 45% of her matches last season.  She won 14 of 28 on hard courts.  She held 65% of her service games which isn’t terrible.  Last week in Hobart she beat two players outside the top 300 in the qualifying rounds. In the main draw she was up against Begu who has also had a poor 2018 season. Watson made a lot of unforced errors in the opening set and seemed clueless about how to change that when she talked to her coach. He gave her a pep talk and she was better in the second set but still well below her best.

Petra Martic

Petra Martic

Martic had an excellent season. She reached the fourth round at the Australian Open.  She maintained a high level on hard courts and on indoor hard courts.  She held 72% of her service games in 2018.

Watson should be competitive if she is in a better frame of mind than in her last match. Back Martic around 1.80
