Paris – Monday’s matches

Mayer v Stepanek:

Mayer promised so much last week but in the end delivered so little . His performance against wawrinka was terrible.

Stepanek camer close to beating Roddick lat week, losing in 3 sets but he had an extra spring in his step ( no pun intended).

Head to heads are 2-1 to Mayer and 1-1 in 2011.  That match against Wawrinka could just have been an off day but Mayer needs his confidence to be high to play well. Some players can grind out a result even if things aren’t going their way but i’m nt confident that Mayer can at the moment.

Stepankek will need his own serve to be solid as it has been all year. He has held serve 79% of the time this year.

This will be a tight one but I am going for Stepanek. Small back on him from the start and i hope Mayer ca take an erly lead to give a better laying price on him.

Update: Mayer played well and broke early. Stepanek didnt really get close to breaking until Mayer served for the set. Then he broke back. UnfortunatelyMayer took the next 2 games and the set.

Mayer won 7-5, 6-3.

Tursunov v Mannarino:

Their only previous meeting was in this tournament in 2008. Tursunov won in straight sets. Mannarino is again a wild card entry to the event although he is a better player than he was 3 years ago.

Can Tursunov make up for his woeful display against Starace in Russia? Mannarino beat Simon in St Petersburg with some solid serving. Simon’s form has been poor lately but that was still a good win.

Tursunov can’t afford to underestimate his opponent today and needs his serve to make an appearance.

I don’t expect this to be easy but if Tursunov shows a fraction of what he is capable of he will be going into round 2.

Update: Tursunov showed no fight or talent and Mannarino won 6-2, 6-2.
