Rogers Cup 2012 – Wednesday

I think Baghdatis has a decent chance against Cilic. Cilic starts as favourite on Betfair at 1.59 But Baghdatis has beaten him twice on hard courts including their most recent match which was in August 2010. Colic’s best results this season have come on grass and clay and he isn’t the best of returners on the hard courts. Three sets are a real possibility. Both hold serve over 80% of the time.

Mona Barthel looked like she was finding some  sort of form on the clay in Sweden. However she lost weakly to Hercog in the semi final and went out of the Olympics in the first round to Baby Rad. Babos looked like she was going to be the new big thing in women’s tennis a year and a half ago. She has certainly become a big thing and can probably crush walnuts between those thighs but her tennis has suffered from the extra pounds she is carrying. She is far less mobile than she needs to be and Barthel will take this fairly comfortably.

Straight sets losses to Darcis and Gulbis in his last 2 tournaments won’t have helped Berdych’s confidence.  He has a tough opponent today in Benneteau who has beaten him in the past. If Berdych can get back to some sort of form he is favourite to take this but as his form is unknown his starting price of 1.30 is unjustified. This has to be worth a lay while we take a look at how he is playing.

Olympic Gold winner Murray is back on court. His preparation for this event just can’t have been “normal” but is Cipolla the man to take advantage? I don’t think so. The best we can hope for is a distracted Murray starting slowly and giving us 1.35 to back him.

Pennetta’s form has been a little erratic but she did make the 3rd round in London. Having watched Scheepers last night I would be amazed if Pennetta isn’t able to grind out a win. She starts at 1.46 on Betfair. I will wait for nearer 1.80.
