18:00 – Robredo v Nieminen
Rankings are 38 and 60. Head to heads are 5-1 to Robredo.
Robredo hasn’t enjoyed the best season so far but we saw his form improve in the Swedish Cup where he reached the quarter finals losing to eventual title winner Almagro.
Taking his stats over the last month he has served 63% of first serves in and has held serve 79% of the time.
Nieminen probably prefers hard courts. He has a very consistent first serve at 69% but it isn’t the big weapon that other players have. Over the last 12 months he has won just 15 from 37 matches. He does hold serve 75% of the time.
Robredo has to be favourite with their head to head history. He will be keen to continue his run of form.
Back Robredo on serve.
Update: Straight forward win for Robredo. 6-1, 6-4.
20:00 – Lopez v De Bakker
Rankings are 25 and 46. They haven’t played before.
Looking at stats over the last 3 months Lopez has served just 56% of first serves in. However he has held serve 84% of the time. De Bakker has served 63% of first serves in and held serve 91% of the time. This suggests that both men are having to work hard for their points but that their ground strokes are solid.
Stats on return are pretty similar for both and not fantastic at around 33% for points won against serve. De Bakker converts more break point opportunities at 43% compared to 33% for Lopez.
Given the poor return performances and the good hold stats this should be a good match for back the server on both players.
As this is on a hard court which favours De Bakker I have to give him the edge.
Update: De Bakker won 7-6, 6-3.
