Rome Masters – Wednesday

OK I’m running short of time. I’ll get as many games done as I can before 10am. I’ll try to add more during the day.

Chela and Simon have only met once and never on clay. Chela’s form hasn’t been great recently  but he played well enough yesterday and took Isner apart in the second set. Simon is getting more consistent as his confidence comes back. This could be a very tight first set although Chela did give up some break points against Isner and I’d expect Simon to take them if the same happens today. I have to go with Simon for the win.

Update: Chela won 6-4, 6-2.

Wawrinka was awful against Fognini. Thankfully for him Fog was even worse. Volandri had been playing well and reached the semi finals in Serbia. He destroyed De Bakker in the first round here losing just 3 games. Stan may grow in confidence now that he has finally won a match but I have never liked his attitude. The Italians are doing ok on home soil and anyone who saw the end of the Bellucci match will have seen how they will try to wind an opponent up if they get a reaction. I will wait to see how Wawrinka starts this one. If he seems as uninterested as he did yesterday i’ll give Volandri a chance.

Update: A much better performance from wawrinka in the first set but then his mind started to wander. It shouldn’t have taken him so long but he won 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

Querrey got lucky yesterday. Almagro will move this idiot round until he pukes. (cue a sraight sets win for Sam!! )

Update: Well he nearly made me puke. Awful start from Almagro but he scrapes through 6-3, 7-6.

Fish takes on Ljubicic. Ljubicci won their only previous meeting on clay which was in the French open last year. It went to 10-8 in the 5th set. I really can’t decide who I think is favourite.  Betfair has Ljubicic at 1.71 . Ljubicci tends to up his game for the big players and the 4-1 head to head in his favour perhaps indicateshe should win. His game is better suited to clay.

After Kohlschreiber’s performance against Stepanek in Munich I can’t put money on him at the moment. Lopez has done quite well for me in recent tournaments and he reached the final in Serbia. Head to head is 2-0 to Lopez although they haven’t played on clay. Kohlschreiber has a new coach which often brings about a short improvement in form and he beat youzhny in straight sets in the first round.  I will wait to see how they start but hope that Lopez starts better.
