12:00 – Robert v Ferrer
Rankings are 100 and 18. They haven’t met before.
Ferrer is an obvious favourite but his price of 1.13 is too low to consider backing.
Robert has shown that he’s in decent form this week and may be able to keep the first set close. Ferrer is consistent on serve but its not a massive serve.
There’s little downside in laying Ferrer from the start although I expect him to win the match. He may lose serve early and allow us to green up.
Update:Right strategy but I got the wrong winner. Ferrer lost his serve in the first game of the match.
Robert won 7-5, 6-4.
14:00 – Monfils v Lopez
Rankings are 13 and 39. They haven’t met before.
Monfils is the number 1 seed for the tournament and hasn’t really been tested so far. On today’s surface he should be way too strong for Lopez.
Having said that you don’t get to the semi’s unless you’re in good form so Lopez could put up a bit of a fight in the opening set.
Watch the opening games. If Monfils looks comfortable we can either back him and green up at the end of the first set or back him on his service games.
Be careful if you decide to let it run after the first set as he can sometimes go to sleep for a few games.
I’d expect a straight sets win for Monfils.
Update: Both men served well from the start but it was Monfils who got the single break needed to take the first set. Then as he often does he went right off the boil and lost the second 6-1.
In the deciding setit went with serve and the title was to be decided with a tie break. Monfils lost the first point on his own serve and was never in contention after that.
Lopez won 3-6, 6-1, 7-6.
