Sunday matches – The Finals

Rogers Cup WTA Final

Stosur v Williams

Stosur perhaps wouldn’t have been everyone’s pick to reach today’s final but while many people have been waiting for her to slip up this week she has been steady enough and has lost just 2 sets in 5 matches.

Williams has had a couple of  scraps to reach  the last day and needed 3 sets to get past Safarova and Zheng. In her match with Safarova she wasn’t serving well in the first set which she lost and I didn’t fancy her chances of getting back into the match. However she started to play much better and in the end it was a comfortable final set.

Williams leads the head to heads 3-2 although Stosur won their last meeting which was in last year’s French Open.

The match will probably be decided by Williams’ serve. If she serves well then she has much more experience of how to win the  big games.  Also if Williams is hitting the big first serves then I don’t think Stosur believes she can beat her in a final. However if Serena serves like she did against Safarova ( in the first set) then that could give Stosur the little added belief that she needs.

As this  is a final I think Williams will be more focussed and she will be in exactly the right frame of mind to get the job done.

So I expect Williams to lift the trophy but her starting price of 1.31 is too low against a player who has beaten her in the past.

Update: Stosur kept the first set tight but it was Williams who took the title 6-4, 6-2.

Rogers Cup ATP Final

Djokovic v Fish

I think its fair to say that Djokovic has had the tougher draw to reach today’s final. He has easily beaten Cilic, Monfils and Tsonga. Only a fading Davydennko gave him problems and led by 2 breaks in the first set although was unable to close out that set.

So the bad news for Fish is that the world numbeer 1 had used his quota of bad games already this week.

Fish has had to work very hard for hiss place in the final. He got some revenge over Gulbis and Wawrinka took him to 3 sets. His serve hasn’t been quite as good as it has been in recent weeks which has meant fewer cheap, quick points.

The heads to heads bring even more bad news for the American. Djokovic leads 8-0 although one of those was a walkover. The last time they playe was in Miami semi  final in March and Djokovic won 6-3, 6-1.

Betfair has Djokovic at 1.10 but  I would be surprised if he doesn’t trade a little higher. However it would be a major shock if Fish wins this and I just don’t see it happening. Djokovic is 1.37 to win 2-0 . For me I won’t be taking part in this match unless Djokovic gets off to a real slow start and a better price becomes available.

Update: Fish showed just how much he has improved in the last 12 months. Djokovic took the opening set but Fish was able to level the match at 1 set all. Djokovic took the third set and with it the title.

Djokovic won 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
