16:00 – Montanes v Gasquet
Rankings are 23 and 47. Head to heads are 3-0 to Gasquet ( all on clay).
Montanes started very badly in his last match. He looked as though he didn’t want to be there and lost the first set. He came back to win the next 2 sets easily but that was partly due to the fact that Haider-Maurer fell apart completely.
Montanes won the recent Mercedes Cup playing some fantastic tennis but his level has dropped. He has lost the first set in all 3 matches he has played since that final.
Gasquet can be fantastic to watch when he is playing well. He has looked like he wants to do well here and has taken care of buiness pretty well. A lapse in concentration gave Brands the chance to take the first set on a tie break but his other 4 sets this week have been impressive.
I would expect Montanes to be up for this match. He can seem to take lower quality players for granted but will know he has to be at his best to get through Gasquet.
Over the last 3 months on clay their serving stats are quite similar. First serves are 63%/62%. Points won on first serve are 70%/69%.
Gasquet’s second serve has been more effective at 61% of points won to Montanes’ 52%.
Gasquet has held serve 85% of the time to Montanes’ 79%.
I’d expect this to be close with Gasquet taking it. Back him on serve.
