Monaco starts as strong favourite at 1.4 against Gimeno Traver but if he serves like he did in the second set yesterday he could have a fight on his hands.
Traver has beaten him the last 2 times on clay including in 5 sets at this year’s French open.
Monaco will fancy his chances of taking the title this week and if he serves well he has a shot. However letting a break lead slip 3 times in the second set against Haider Maurer doesn’t fill me with confidence. If Monaco starts to struggle on serve he can look like a player ranked way below his current position of 30.
Traver has shown some decent form this season before he was stopped in his tracks by injury in Madrid.
We have video for this match so watch to see how solid Monaco seems on serve. If he has to fight to hold and is missing a lot of first serves it is well worth a lay. If he serves well he wins.
Update: This was similar to Monaco’s match with Haider Maurer. An easy first set and then in the second set his level dropped. The difference today was that Traver was able to hold his own serve and took the set.
The third set was tight and both had chances but it was Traver who had a bad service game right at the end.
Monaco won 6-2, 3-6, 6-4
Montanes faces Thiem who beat Melzer in straight sets yesterday. The young Austrian will remember this tournament for a long time I think but today is where the dream ends. I don’t like the price on Montanes who will not find it easy to break the kid’s serve but he faced another great server Hanescu in the last round and he found a way. He should have more than enough clay court experience to out wit Thiem and if Montanes goes a break down I will be backing him.
Update: A good effort from Thiem but as expected Montanes’ experience was too much for the kid.
Montanes won 6-4, 6-3.
This evening I like Jankovic’s chances of beating Urszula Radwanska.
JJ lost her opening set to Burdette but that could be down to it being her first match since Wimbledon. Radwanska reached the quarter finals last week losing to Cibulkova and she has the game to make a match of this so I will be looking for at least 1.80 on Jankovic before getting involved. There could be a few breaks in this one!
Update: Raswanska took the opening set. JJ levelled but it was Radwanska who took the decider.
Radwanska won 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
I think Cornet will prove too much for Heather Watson but I see 3 sets here. Watson has been serving well and I think she will keep the sets close. Cornet is having one of her best seasons and has served pretty well over the last 3 months. She is ahead of Watson on return of serve stats for that same period although Watson converts more of her break point chances at an impressive 53% . They have never played before so it’s hard to get a feel for who will start fastest but a good start from Heather will give us a more attractive price on Cornet.
Update: Watson was 0-30 on Cornet’s serve and just 2 points away from a 5-3 lead. She couldn’t get the break and was broken in her next game. Cornet served out the match.
Cornet won 6-4, 6-4.
