Thursday’s matches ( rain permitting )

It seemed to be raining everywhere yesterday. Rain again in Austria. Could be a long day with little action. Lets hope at least America can stay dry for us.

Llodra plays Grigor Dimitrov in the Legg Mason Classic.  Dimitrov won their only previous match which was last year and indoors. It was 7-5 in the third set.

Normally I would have Llodra as favourite here although he doesn’t have a great record in US tournaments. He has only played a Davis Cup match since Wimbledon and that was a loss to Petzschner on clay.  Dimitrov has been in America since Wimbledon and so should be comfortable on the hard courts. His results haven’t been good though.

So I’d say the stats have it pretty even over all. But then we see that Llodra’s price has moved from 1.65 to 2.12 . A similar situation to Fognini’s match yesterday which saw the Italian lose in straight sets.

Sligfht edge to Dimitrov although an exceptional serving performance could turn it Llodra’s way. Best not to get too heavily involved until we see some sort of pattern in the match.

Update: Llodra retired at 3-4 in the first set. Bets void.

Nieminen and Stepanek: Stepanek leads the head to heads 4-2 although their last “match” went o Stepanek on a walkover.

Stepanek has only given up 1 break point in 2 matches here so far so his serve is working well.  Nieminen came back strong from his break after Wimbledon and was perhaps a little unlucky that some of the matches went against him. I think he will struggle to get hold of Stepanek’s serve on the faster courts and will be rushed into making mistakes. I also expect Stepanek to be more consistent in the rallies.

I have to go with Stepanek although I’d prefer a higher price before putting the full stake on. Probably half stake on him from the start.

Update: Stepanek won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2

American Sloane Stephens knocked out Juila Goerges in straight sets yesterday. Goerges has been struggling for a few tournaments now but that was a surprise result.

Today she is up against Paszek who reached the semi finals last week in the heat. The Wimbledon quarter finalist has been in decent form although I’m not sure how she managed to lose her opening set against Halep 6-0.

Goerges said that Sloane played very well but then she would say that wouldn’t she? Looking at recent matches against half-decent opponents Paszek has made a slow start to the match so I will open with a lay on her. However I feel she has to be favourite to take the match.

Update: A tight first half of the opening set saw both players serving well. Stephens broke and was looking good to take the openeing set but Paszek retired at 3-5. Bets void.
