Tuesday 24th July

Haider Maurer has been doing very well on the Challenger clay courts with 2 recent finals and a semi final. His opponent today is Ernests Gulbis who reached the quarter finals of the Swiss Open last week.

Gulbis starts at 1.73 on Betfair and showed a little of the talent that we know he has. Still lots of very poor errors though and playing a decent clay courter in his opponent’s home country won’t be easy. Having said that Haider Maurer’s record at this event isn’t great. Its not a great laying price so will be looking to lay Gulbis around 1.50 . This should be a close match.

Update: Very strange match.  Gulbis was apparently outplayed for almost 2 sets. Haider Maurer was 6-2, 5-2 ahead yet Gulbis fought back to win 10 of the next 11 games to win in 3 sets.

Gulbis won 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Bolelli looks a tempting price at 1.90 against Zeballos. Zeballos plays his best tennis on clay so it won’t be an easy match. However Bollelli won a Challenger event last week ( on a hard court) and whilst winning a main tour title often means a lack of motivation the following week the rewards on the Challenger tour are much less. I think Bolelli will feel confident and will be looking to progress a couple of rounds here. I expect more errors from Zeballos.
