Volandri is up against last week’s winner Granollers. The head to heads are 1-1 with Volandri winning their last match on clay in April of this year. he won in straight sets.
Granollers starts at 1.47 which seems generous. The price will be due to the fact that Volandri won their last match and also because often players who win the previous week’s tournament aren’t motivated in the next one. In Volandri’s win they were playing on very slow clay courts whereas this week’s courts are playing really quite quickly. Also the slight altitude will allow the ball to fly a little faster. All that favours Granollers.
I’m going for the Granollers win. Even a less intense standard of play from him on these faster courts should be enough. Also his serve will get him a lot of easy points.
Update: Not a great performance but Granollers won 6-4, 6-2.
Date Krumm takes on an opponent in Dulko who hasn’t played since the French Open where she retired from the match against Bartoli. Date Krumm herself has only played 1 match since Wimbledon which was last week. She lost to Cibulkova but probably needed that match to get back in the swing.
Dulko was married last week and won’t have been thinking much about tennis. This could be a match full of unforced errors but I favour Date Krumm to be better prepared. I don’t see any real motivation for Dulko to do well this week.
Update: Dulko started quite well and won the first break. Date Krumm fought back to take the match 7-5, 6-0.
Vesnina and Erakovic meet in the Mercury Insurance Open. A fit Vesnina would be favourite here but she retired from her last match against Rezai. Erakovic reached the quarter finals last week beating Azarenka in the second round.
There’s a very good chance that Vesnina isn’t fully recovered and Erakovic has the better recent form anyway. I expect he rto come through in 2 tight sets. She has the more reliable serve.
Update: An early break put Vesnina under pressure and she failed to hold serve throughout the rest of the set. Erakovic won 6-1, 6-2.
